The No.11 blade is an elongated triangular blade sharpened along a beveled edge with a strong tip, ideal for piercing abscesses or puncture wounds when inserting chest drains. It’s held like a pencil, and surgeons often turn it upside down to prevent it from being accidentally inserted too deep. To avoid this, the scalpel should not be placed on the back end, but the heel of the hand should be placed on the skin, stabilizing the hand to help prevent unnecessary deep cuts.

No. 11 blade is also used for other small incisions such as ankle, venous and arterial centerline during laparoscopic port insertion, aortic opening and removal of calcification in the aorta or mitral valve, anatomy, and surgical treatment of foot disorders and lower extremities in podiatry.
